DIY Resin Dominoes

DIY Resin Dominoes

Make a beautiful set of custom dominoes using resin and pressed flowers. This is a great resin craft idea for beginners.

Have you seen the heirloom, gorgeous game sets floating around online? I absolutely fell in love with some that I’ve seen, so when I saw a dominoes mold in the resin section at Hobby Lobby, I just HAD to try my hand at making some.

I have never worked with resin before this project. I was intimidated by it and always just passed it by. If you’ve felt that way in the past, you have nothing to fear! It was much easier to work with than I was expecting and now that I’ve completed one resin craft, I am hooked and will be making more for sure.

This post is sponsored by Hobby Lobby. All ideas are my own.

Are you ready to see the whole process step-by-step? Let’s go!

Materials List

For The Dominoes:

For The Book Box:

Resin Dominoes Instructions

Step 1: Mix up the resin according to the package instructions. This resin kit comes with wooden popsicle sticks for mixing and little measuring cups that measure 30mL. I used four of the included little measuring cups of each part and had extra. You could use 3 cups each instead. I poured the two parts into a paper cup so I could just throw it away when I was done. Stir together for the full amount of time listed on the package instructions.

Step 2: Pour the resin into the domino mold. I purchased mold release spray, then forgot to use it and my dominoes came out just fine, so I’m going to say that step is optional.

Step 3: Use tweezers to carefully grab the tiny pressed flowers and place them on the resin. You don’t want to get any resin on the tweezers, so switch to a popsicle stick to push the flowers gently underneath the surface of the resin. You’ve got about 40 minutes to work with the resin before you shouldn’t touch it anymore, so don’t freak out feeling like you have to place all the flowers in a speedy craze.

Step 4: Once all the flowers are placed into the resin, get down at eye level with the mold and make sure all the individual domino molds are filled up completely and no flower parts are sticking up. Drizzle extra resin on top if needed.

Step 5: This is the hardest step… you have to leave this bad boy alone for 24 hours so it can harden!

Step 6: After 24 hours, pop all the dominoes out of the mold and oooh and aaaahhh over how stinkin’ gorgeous they are! This part was soooooo satisfying and the best part of the entire craft.

Book Box Instructions

Step 1: Give the entire box a light sanding. Paint the edges and inside of the box.

Step 2: Use a paper trimmer to cut pieces of patterned paper to fit on the front cover of the book. Cut a second piece for the back and spine of the book.

Step 3: Apply a layer of Mod Podge, then glue the paper in place.

Step 4: Use a craft blade to trim away the extra paper by the box hinges.

Step 5: Add the word “Dominoes” to the book spine using gold vinyl. I cut mine on my Silhouette machine. The font is called “Herschel Regular” in case you were wondering.

I love how this turned out! Now I want to make a whole collection of custom beautiful games. I’m going to start with Tic Tac Toe and Chess/Checkers.

I also love the idea of preserving special occasion flowers this way. Wedding bouquets, prom corsages, anniversary flowers, etc. Wouldn’t that be fun?

Would you be willing to try resin now that you’ve seen a complete newbie have some success? I hope so! Hobby Lobby had so many cool resin molds that I can’t wait to try this again. What should I make next?
