Learn how to make cute little scarecrows out of wooden craft sticks. This is a fun and easy fall craft for kids and adults!
Today I’m sharing a fun and easy fall craft idea. I’m going to show you how to make popsicle stick scarecrows.
To make them, you will need:
Materials Needed
- Small Popsicle Sticks (2.5 inches)
- Standard Popsicle Sticks (4.5 inches)
- Hot Glue Gun + Glue Sticks
- Craft Paint
- Assorted Small Paint Brushes
- Paint Pens or Gel Pens
- Assorted Embellishments (ribbon, twine, mini flowers, paper, burlap, etc.)
- Tiny Googly Eyes, optional
Instructions
Step 1: Use hot glue to attach the craft sticks together in the order shown in this photo:
- Place the two regular sized popsicle sticks side-by-side.
- Glue one small stick in the center.
- Add two more small sticks, one on either side of the center small stick.
- Glue two sticks on either side of the two long sticks. These will be the arms.
- Add three more small sticks to the top area, then glue one horizontal stick in place. This will be the hat brim.
- Cut off the curved sides of the hat brim. Sharp scissors work well for this.
Step 2: Paint the wood to look like a scarecrow. I like to start with the pants and hat, then the shirt, then when those layers dry, I go in and add the smaller painted details like the hair, hat band, straw sticking out of the sleeves, shoes, etc.
Step 3: Add details with paint pens.
It is much easier to add fine details like plaid stripes, stitching, shoelaces and knee patches with a paint pen. I also draw the face on with pens. Googly eyes are cute on this craft too. I made one to show you as an example.
Step 4: Accessorize! I cut tiny strips of golden yellow cardstock to use as hair and glue it on the back side of the hat. You could probably use real straw or raffia or yellow yarn for the hair too.
I added fabric bandanas, twine, a little miniature sunflower, etc. to bring these cute scarecrows to life and give them more texture and interest. I think the bandana really helps balance the proportion of the scarecrow’s face, so I wouldn’t skip that accessory, but the rest are just for funsies, so do whatever you think sounds cute!
Aren’t they so cute? I love how each scarecrow has his own personality. It was really fun to think up little details and make each scarecrow unique. Such a fun fall craft! I hope you’ll give it a try.
