A photo series highlighting the Equestrian community in South Africa by photographer and filmmaker Karabo Mooki (previously featured here). Exploring race, general, sexuality and class, Mooki’s work is rooted in authentic emotions and unique narratives. In “Black Rein,” he takes on the legacy of South Africa’s first Black showjumper, Enos Mafokate:
“I spent some time with Enos, his trainers and his trainees at The Soweto Equestrian Centre which Enos developed in order to provide marginalized communities access to horse therapy and a chance at competing in a sport that has historically ostracized Black communities. This story focuses on Enos and those that are actively engaged in reshaping the Equestrian world in South Africa.”
