Learn how to make giant cherries out of red plastic bowls. They are the cutest DIY gift for Valentine’s Day.
Let’s make some giant cherries to give as a special Valentine’s Day gift, because WHY NOT?!
You’ll need a few supplies from Dollar Tree and a few crafty supplies you might already have at home and then you can make these darling cherries. The fun part is that the cherries are filled with Valentine’s Day gifts! So really they are just the coolest gift wrapping job ever.
Let’s get started! Here is everything you’ll need (plus gifts to fill the cherries with, of course)
Materials Needed
- Four Red Plastic Bowls from Dollar Tree (in the party section by the tablecloths and plastic silverware)
- Four Green Pipe Cleaners
- Green Cardstock
- Ribbon
- Paper Shreds (Red or Pink)
- Clear Tape
- Hot Glue Gun + Glue Sticks
- Scissors
- Valentine’s Day Ribbon (the one I used is also from Dollar Tree)
- Printable Cherry Valentine’s Day Cards (download at the bottom of this post)
- Baker’s Twine
Instructions
Step 1: Add paper shreds to two bowls and arrange the gifts you want to give on top of the shreds. Flip the other two bowls upside down and place them on top of the filled bowls. Don’t forget to remove the manufacturer stickers.
Step 2: Use pieces of clear tape to secure the bottom and top bowls together. I put a strip of tape vertically every three or four ridges until the bowls felt secure.
Step 3: Twist two pieces of pipe cleaner together to make a thicker stem, then bend the bottom inch or so at a 90 degree angle. Repeat with two more pipe cleaners.
Step 4: Glue the pipe cleaner stems onto the top centers of the two bowls, using the bent part as the main attachment point. I had to add lots of glue, then lean them up against the edge of a table to hold them in place at the right angle while the hot glue cooled. This probably took two or three minutes, so be patient.
Step 5: Once the glue is completely hardened, attach the stems at the top by twisting them together. Cut a leaf shape out of green cardstock. Cut a 1 inch slit at the bottom edge of the leaf and fold it in on itself. This will give you a more 3D looking leaf. You can also curl the tip of the leaf over your finger to get it to bend in a more natural shape. Once you like the look of your leaf, attach it to the top of the pipe cleaners with hot glue.
Step 6: Tie two cute bows out of ribbon and hot glue them over the area where the stems attach to the bowls. These bows serve two purposes: they hide the glue you used to attach the pipe cleaners and they also just make the whole thing cuter. Yay!
Step 7: If you want to add a cute, punny gift tag, I’ve got some great ones you can download. Print them on white cardstock, cut one out, then attach it to the gift using baker’s twine.
And there you have it! You made giant cherries!
