About the Book
Determine the right-sized layout for you
The biggest decisions model railroaders face when they choose to build a layout is determining its operational design and size. What is the “right-sized” layout for you is a very personal choice. Each model railroader has his or her own goals and objectives, which has an impact on layout design and the space it will require.
Efficient use of space, benchwork, and layout room aesthetics
Once you have an idea of the track plan you want to design, it is time to take a look at some of the import facets of layout construction. These include efficient use of space, aisle width, lift outs or removable sections, layout height, types of benchwork construction, electrical, and layout room aesthetics. These aspects need to be included in your track planning as they will have a direct impact on the operation and enjoyment of your layout.
Prototype inspired track plans
How do you select a prototype railroad to model when there are so many excellent candidates to select from? It all comes back to your givens and druthers that you decided on when you set out to build a model railroad. If you have selected to build a small switching layout, then the prototype you choose should feature slow-speed switching operations.
About the author
Author Thomas Klimoski was able to work part time as a trainman for the Blue Ridge Scenic Railroad and learned a lot about prototype railroad operations. This experience has helped him focus on what he enjoys most about model railroading: local switching operations on a shortline railroad. Thomas is a frequent contributor to Model Railroader magazine and has had his layout featured in Model Railroad Planning as well as Great Model Railroads 2020.
