From the Publisher
The art of storytelling has always been a central factor in Broadway musicals
But, despite the efforts of the genre’s most creative playwrights, many of the most acclaimed musicals stemmed from real events from American history. This book includes summaries and analyses of forty of these musicals, ranging from legendary flops to epoch-changing triumphs, from off Broadway experiments that lasted only a few weeks to venerated classics that changed the industry forever.
Each chapter presents basic details about the historical event behind each show, followed by a production history and an analysis of the score. Special attention is paid to historical personages and how they were portrayed, as well as the accuracy of the stories involved. The chapters are arranged in chronological order by subject, ranging from the American Revolution to the early 1980s, with no more than two decades separating each successive chapter.
Musical theater’s main purpose is to entertain, but through these musicals and others, Broadway has served to combine the American musical with events portrayed on newspapers’ front pages throughout its history in ways that are both entertaining and illuminating. I hope that this book will encourage teachers of history and musical theater to discuss these conflating elements, which will enrich the learning experience of students of both.
